Horizon Lanka Academy
The children who attend Horizon Lanka Academy are pupils of the public schools in the area and school leavers who have finished their OLs and ALs. They come to Horizon Lanka Academy after school hours and during weekends and holidays. We teach them ICT and English, while providing them with the additional opportunity for personal development and acquiring skills in communication, leadership, caring and sharing.
The parents of the children are cultivators and farmers, who have been relying on traditional farming practices passed down through generations for their livelihood. Some of these students find it difficult to pay the school fees and you can contribute to their school fees through Global Giving website.
There is an English teacher and a computer teacher at Horizon Lanka. Local and foreign volunteers also teach at Horizon Lanka from time to time. Horizon Lanka also supports English and ICT education at the public schools in the village by providing volunteers to the public schools as well.
Horizon Lanka is in need of computers for its computer lab. There are around 10 operational computers at Horizon Lanka at the moment, and around the same amount are in need of repair.
Blogging for Education
The English knowledge of the school-age children in rural areas is very low due to various reasons, such as lack of exposure to native speakers, and shortage of properly trained teachers and learning material. This project aims to help these children improve their English through a new and exciting means -blogging. Horizon Lanka targets approximately 400 school age children from grade 6 to grade 11 in the local school system (ages 13 – 17 years.) The beneficiaries will be selected irrespective of their gender, ethnicity or other discriminating factors so that everybody gets equal opportunities to benefit from the project. This project is funded by Plan Sri Lanka.
