HEALTH |
There are two rural hospitals in Mahavilachchiya Divisional Secretariat Division. One in Mahavilachchiya and other is situated in Tantirimale. The community faces health problems which are common in most of the remote villages in the Dry Zone. However, most of them can be prevented through health education and upgrading the health facilities available in the area. The village hospital is doing a valuable service helping the community within its limited resources. The critical patients who cannot be treated in two rural hospitals are sent to Anuradhapura hospital which is 40km away. The most appropriate solution to these problems is therefore not to rush patients to Anuradhapura but to bring the facilities to the village. Hence the existing rural hospitals which cater to the needs of more than 20000 residents of the area should be upgraded to the status of model hospitals with the modern facilities like the use of internet for distant consultations (telemedicine). This can be made a reality with the ICTA grants that are available. Electricity fluctuations were quite frequent here and the Horizon Lanka was able to provide a backup generator through a donor organization called Lak Saviya Foundation in Australia. There are few pharmacies and private dispensaries in Mahavilachchiya. Private dispensaries are open only after 5pm. There are a number of ayurvedic medical practitioners in the village. They are specialized in various fields and have won the people’s faith over the centuries as the practice is transferred from generations to generations. |
