EDUCATION |
There are 14 public schools in Mahavilachchiya Divisional Secretariat Division and a considerable student population is receiving education in these schools now. There are no private schools in Mahavilachchiya. Three public schools have got good computer labs but only one of those schools has got Internet access. Horizon Lanka provided Internet through mesh network to that school and another school that has only one computer donated by Horizon Lanka. The facilities in village schools are limited and most of the teachers are from outstations and when they get transfers students lose the opportunity of studying some subjects like English, mathematics and science. Hence, sometimes the syllabus will not be covered by the end of the year. There are some private tuition classes in the village for subjects like English, mathematics and science. Further, for Advanced Level education only Art Stream classes are done in these schools and, therefore the students who wish to do their A/L in commerce, science or mathematics streams have to go to the city. The biggest school in Mahavilachchiya, the Siddhartha School has been selected as an Isura school and this school will get a lot of facilities soon. Isura School Project is recently launched by the Ministry of Education to bring modern facilities to rural villages. Horizon Lanka Academy provides English and computer education to the enrolled students. Apart from the government schools, private tuition classes and Horizon Lanka Academy, few dhamma schools in Buddhist temples also teach Buddhism on Sundays. 14 PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN MAHAVILACHCHIYA DIVISIONAL SECRETARIAT DIVISION 1.
