ECONOMY

The economy of the village depends mostly on agriculture. Most of villagers do rice cultivation and some of the villagers do “slash and burn” (chena) cultivation too. They sell the rice and vegetables either to the buyers who come to the village or the farmers themselves take the crop to the market in Anuradhapura, Nochchiyagama or Dambulla markets. But a common grievance among the villagers is that they have to spend a great deal of money for fertilizer and insecticides and therefore, they do not get the due in return for their labor and expenses. But from year 2008, the farmers have been able to get good prices due to rise of food prices globally. The other main source of income to Mahavilachchiya is the freshwater fish business. Mahavilachchiya is famous for its big freshwater fish produce which comes mainly from Mahavilachchiya reservoir and other small reservoirs and streams.

Industries

Most of the Mahavilachchiya dwellers depend on traditional farming methods which provides only to existence. A few families are moving towards alternative methods of income earning such as poultry farming and dairy farming. There is rice processing mills as well. Apart from these there are small businesses like making bricks, concrete blocks, etc. too.

Investments

The poverty of ideas and the lack of capital hinder the development of the community. There are opportunities in abundance. Tree planting, farming (rice and vegetables and various crops like cow pea, cashew and corns) will ensure a healthy income as the soil around Mahavilachchiya is said to be fine for such crops. Brick making and tile industry, too, stand a fairly sensible investment opportunity.
